More is coming here about us and how House of Blyss has come to be over the past 3 years. However, for now please read about our practices and sustainability below.

About Us

  • Every single garment is made in our Naarm/Melbourne Studio on Bunurong Land. Our entire manufacturing process is in house, including the dyeing of fabrics, sampling, cutting, sewing and packaging. This allows us to have full control over our designing and manufacturing process. Every single garment is made with time and love so that your garments can last as long as possible.

  • All of our materials are sourced within Australia, predominantly from small, local businesses. This includes our dyes, laces, elastics, hardware and fabrics. The majority of our laces and silks are deadstock. But what is deadstock? In many cases large fabric manufacturers will purposefully over produce to be able to sell “deadstock” fabric that would otherwise supposedly go to waste. This is NOT what we buy.

We purchase our silks from local Australian designers that no longer need the fabric. The majority of our silk is ex-bridal silk; often we purchase their off cuts as well as rolls of fabrics that have minor faults that we can be easily avoided when manufacturing lingerie.

We dye most of our silks in-house into our beautiful colours. We use Procion dyes - cold fibre reactive dyes. These have a relatively low environmental impact, especially in the low quantities which we use.

All of our swimwear fabrics are deadstock as well, sourced from Melbourne and Sydney. While we have sourced these as sustainably as we can, swimwear fabric, even if it is recycled or made from ocean waste, is synthetic. This mean every time it is washed, micro plastics enter the waterways. We have done our best to be sustainable within our swim collection but there are currently not many alternatives to synthetic swim fabric.

  • We package every order in recycled tissue paper with our care card. This is shipped in a compostable mailer which you can compost yourself at home! Our packaging is minimal to reduce waste.

While we do our best to send our orders sustainably, we do currently use Aus Post which does contribute negatively to the planet with the consumption of fuel to transport and ship orders. We completely acknowledge this is not sustainable or environmentally friendly.

  • We collect every single piece of fabric, lace, elastic and threads that are off cuts from the manufacturing process. We currently have a few boxes that will either be donated to a fabric recycler or sent to other creatives that will use these scraps for recycled art pieces or garments.

We try to create as minimal waste as possible during the manufacturing process, however no waste at all is currently not achievable for us. By having a made to order system we avoid over producing certain garments which would then be wasted. This does mean that you may have to wait a few weeks while we create your pieces but we do believe this is the best way to prevent over-manufacturing.

  • Caring for your pieces is one of the most sustainable practices you can have. By looking after your pieces, you can ensure your garments last and look their best for longer.

We highly recommend cold hand-washing all of our garments. Silk is a particularly delicate fabric and while you can wash them in a laundry bag in the washing machine, the garments are more likely to get damaged and will loose their beautiful lustre much more quickly. You can hand wash your garments in the sink with some neutral soap with cool water.

  • While we do describe ourselves as a sustainable brand we acknowledge that we are not perfect!

We do out best with deadstock silks and swimwear fabrics and locally sourcing the large majority of our materials. However, our black silks are sourced new. Our swimwear fabrics, despite being deadstock are synthetic and will release micro-plastics every time they are washed. While our studio does have solar power, it is not entirely run off this and therefore fossil fuels are used to power our machines as well.

Many of these aspects are out of our control and while we can do our best we acknowledge it is near impossible to be perfectly sustainable in our current climate.
